Well here we are, finding ourselves deep in the throes of the Holiday Season. Usually, the end of the year finds Pickxen slowing down a smidge in order to take some time to enjoy family and friends and give thanks for all the wonderful blessings bestowed on us this previous year. Where has the time gone, anyway, and didn’t we ask that very same question about this time last year?? One thing we can report is that during some previously scheduled Fall cleaning, Miss Dixie came across some long lost, long hidden, long forgotten songs out back in yon smokehouse under a pile of dried out alder. So we blew the dust off of them, took a look and decided that perhaps we should take a stab at committing them acetate (or perhaps some other method of rendering not known about in the 20th century). So if you find yourself passing through the trailer park in the next month or so and you think you may be hearing the odd sound or two emanating from lot #47, rather than asking, “What’s he building in there,” it may be that you are hearing portions of the new Pickxen recording being cobbled together which should coincide nicely with the finishing details on our brand new website Details to follow, surely as night follows day. Oh, by the way, should you ask yourself, “What’s he building in there,” you wouldn’t be the first:
Well friends, here we find ourselves in the dog days of Summer 2016 and things seem to be changing on a daily basis (save the 90 plus degree weather we seem to have been ‘enjoying’ nigh on these last 60 days, or so). You can find our cd ‘Picks ‘n Vittles’ all over the internet – iTunes, Spotify, Amazon – and all the other fine retail establishments available to us via the world wide web. And shortly you will be seeing a brand new website for this little band – it will still be Pickxen.com but with a new look – one that will continue to carry us throughout this new century of musical adventures. And we shall be casting a wider net throughout the southeast – you will be able to find us in North and South Carolina, perhaps Alabama and a little farther afield in Georgia spreading that musical fairy dust hither and yon in the upcoming months. So keep an eye out for ‘them changes’ as they surely will be upon us before we know it. In the meantime, enjoy this little musical interlude which underlies our theme for the day:
Wow friends!! Seems like it was forever ago since we last visited! But we all made it through Autumn and we made it through the holidays and we made it all the way through 2015 and woke up to greet 2016, right on time, like we knew she would be. All the while the music kept going ’round and ’round and that, too, came out right where it was supposed to. December found us competing in the Eddie’s Attic Bi-Annual Songwriters Shootout and although we did not win we made a lot of new friends and met some incredibly talented musicians. And, yes, it really WAS nice just to be nominated. The new year is now on us and you will be able to find us all over the map: There are coffeehouse shows, winery shows and a CD Release Party on June 4th in Duluth, Ga. Keep up to date on our concert calendar, (over there just to the right), and you’ll be the second to know about what’s happening (after us, of course, silly). In the meantime we are hard at work finishing up our cd, which should out later this Spring. It’s loads of fun working on it and very rewarding knowing we will be able to properly catalogue just what it is we HAVE been doing these past couple of years.
Yep, the music does go ’round and ’round! Heck, don’t take my word for it, if you don’t believe me, just listen to Primo Scala:
Well hello, once again, friends and neighbors! Been quite awhile since we last visited, so let’s see if we can’t get y’all up to speed on all, (or at least most), things Pickxen. So get you some sweet tea and find a spot on the divan and get a load of our Autumn Almanac:
First and foremost, due to events that are simply out of our control, the Pickxen family has been expanding exponentially, (or at least ponentially), if I may be a smidge mathematical for a moment. Births, weddings – you name it – we’ve had them here in good ole Pickxlandia!! So welcome one and all to the Pickxen family – we’re so glad you’re here!! In between these exciting life changing events, we have been able to squeeze in some live gigs on occasion. We wandered on up to Calhoun, Georgia to play for our favorite grass fed beef ranchers, the wonderful deGraans, at their customer appreciation shindig. Check them out at dgfarms.com . October found us returning to the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia for the Southeastern Cowboy Festival held on the grounds of the museum. You can find more about the Booth at boothmuseum.org . And let’s not forget about the fun we had up in Dahlonega at Cavender Creek Vineyards. Fine wine and fine music – what a combination! We shall return to Cavender Creek on December 5th for more fun and wine tasting – join us then, won’t you www.cavendercreekvineyards.com . And we shall be heading up the road to Charlotte, N.C. for a private event on November 30th. Keep your eyes peeled…..we may be showing up at a venue close by on the way – Greenville, Spartanburg, Gastonia………….Boiling Springs – we just may be dropping by for some impromptu Pickxen pickin.’ And of course, there’s the Bi-Annual Shootout at Eddie’s Attic on December 12. We are humbled and grateful to be chosen to participate in this competition. Details at eddiesattic.com . Well, that about catches up our Autumn Almanac. Who knew at the time we would have something in common with a certain Mr. Ray Davies of Muswell Hill, London in the the United Kingdom. Why he has his own Autumn Almanac and wouldn’t you know it – he likes his football on Saturday and roast beef on Sunday – just like us:
Well, don’t ‘cha just know it! Tough times don’t last – but tough people do. Our own Pixie P. has been going through some tough times with his poor old back but with the help of some supremely talented doctors and the Big Man upstairs, he has prevailed, the back issues are only a memory right now and this here little band is ready to move forward with an all out assault on the music business!! To that end, we have uploaded a new song onto our website and have added a link to our SoundCloud page, which you can also find just over there to the right of this blog post. Our newest song is called 7 LB. Rhyme. Have you ever have the feeling that your conversations lacked meaning and candor? That you traded only in the currency of froth and vacuity when it came to meaningful dialogue? Well sir, this little song is our attempt to address such feelings………..we hope you enjoy it!
We have been busy as ever rehearsing as a trio once again which we have been unable to do with Pixie sidelined. We are very excited about how things are progressing and are really looking forward to our appearance at The Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia on July 16! UPDATE: We had an awesome time playing for all the great folks at The Booth! So honored that they have invited us back to play during the 13th Annual Southeastern Cowboy Festival & Symposium in late October… stay tuned for details!
In addition, we have been in ongoing negotiations with Mr. Jerry, who lives down there towards the front end of the trailer park. He has a sweet doublewide in which he has built a recording studio, there on the other side of the kitchen. With any luck at all we will be there in short order singing into his can on yonder side of the glass and walking away with some fine acetate recordings! Ahhh………don’t ‘cha just know it – things are working out just fine!! Here’s a little something to pass the time with by Mr. Huey ‘Piano’ Smith and His Clowns:
Well, it’s a new month and Pickxen band finds itself with new challenges nearly everyday (and who doesn’t like a new challenge, anyway?). Ole Pixie P. woke up a few days ago and found that his back wasn’t interested in taking part in the daily rigors that keep an old bass player pounding away with the rhythm of life. So until his back can get right with the rest of him, Pixie is spending most of his days laying around and thanking God for the odd five minutes at a time that he gets to do crazy stuff like standing………… and sitting and…………well, that’s about it. But this too will pass and we know Pixie will soon be his old self – thumping away life’s tensions right on the 2 and the 4 (and if he really must – the 1 and the 3).
In other news, strange things do seem to be happening nearly everyday here at the trailer park. It seems an old friend has awoken here in lot number 39 and she wants to be sure we know she’s here. We’re calling her Shelby Jean, (we think she was prolly named after both her momma and daddy), and she is making her presence felt. We think she may have been one of the previous tenants here and has since gone on to her heavenly reward. Now, apparently there’s not be a lot to do up there, (aside from dining at the endless feast that is set before the residents), or perhaps she disagrees with the way we have decorated the place. Either way, we have had pictures falling off the walls, a flower pot mysteriously falling off its perch atop Miss Dixie’s curio cabinet (with all her Madam Alexander figurines, featuring, of course Miss Scarlet O’Hara), and then there was the mystery boom……..heard only by a chosen few here, but felt by all. It shook us to the bone. But we shall carry on, hoping we don’t offend Miss Shelby Jean anymore. And if we do – y’all will be the second to know!! Here’s the theme song for the day, presented by Sister Rosetta Tharpe:
Well, here we are, hip deep in the dog days of Summer, 2015. Lots and lots of Pickxen news to share with you all on this fine but toasty August day.
We want to start by thanking the good folks at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Ga., for allowing us to be part of their Summer Entertainment Series. We had a wonderful time playing there in July and it looks like we shall be back there for the big shindig in October. Check them out at boothmuseum.org . It’s a wonderful facility and they house the world’s largest collection of cowboy art!! Shortly after that we spent a wonderful afternoon playing for the fine folks up at Foxfireland in Clayton, Ga. (find them at www.foxfire.org ). And then we found ourselves with a little free time this past Monday night, so we headed down to Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Ga., for their weekly Open Mic Contest – and by cracky, don’t ‘cha know we just won that contest!! That means we return to Eddie’s on Saturday, December 12 and compete against the other Monday night winners in their Open Mic Shootout – heck, maybe even walk away with $1000.00!! We had a great time at Eddie’s – everyone there was as nice as they could be and we met some other really good songwriters – what a night!!
We continue to record new material in hopes of having something for the music buying public very, very soon. In an effort to send some nice cooling vibes your way, may we offer you this fine Summer musical interlude:
Saints preserve us!! Here we find ourselves already hip deep into Lent, The Ides of March loom ever closer and we’re nigh on Saint Paddy’s, too. Y’all making yer way toward Savannah keep an eye out on I-16 for Messr. Smokey and for the Love of Mike find you a designated driver and do whatever you do SAFELY! We’re busy holed up in the trailer park honing our craft and looking forward to gigs in Virginia and the mountains of north Georgia (details to follow as soon as we finish crossin’ the rest of them t’s and whatnot). We’re chomping at the bit and rearing to go……..just wanna make sure we do ourselves proud once we get out in front of the ticket buying public. In the meantime, check out the latest addition to ourmusic page. It’s a work of fiction about a nice southern girl named ‘Jubilee’ who likes to hold close to the traditions that made her forebears special. And spinning right now on Miss Dixie’s Hi-Fi:.
Land ‘o Goshen where does the time go! You wake up one morning thanking God you made it through January – the next thing you know – your’e on the lookout for March hares (when is rabbit season, anyway…………….) Such big plans we have for our little band. We’ve been rehearsing our butts off and scouring the landscapes for gigs and forgot all about this here little ole blog. We ARE alive and well down here in the Southland and are very grateful for all the visits to our site. We have also added a Twitter account and do have a Facebook page for those of you who haven’t visited those accounts yet. And as always, finding us on the internet is easy. We are the ONLY Pickxen in the universe……….so just click here @Pickxen . More music coming soon on our music page, too! In the meantime, we’d like to treat you to some good ole harmonizing by NOLA’s own Boswell Sisters:
Well great day in the morning! It’s yours truly this fine morning, Pixie P., with the originating blog on this here blog post spot. Wanna take a moment and welcome you all to this fine piece of websitery as we launch our little ole selves into an intergalactic orbitation into show biz-ery, proper. Take a look around, we’re adding new stuff on an almost daily basis. And don’t be a stranger – come back often or better yet – leave your email address and we’ll get back to you. As a parting thought for the day, I always try to start my day with a nutritious breakfast and some W.C. Fields. Welp, I done ate already, so here ya are:
